Changing Careers and Finding Your Passion

Most of us have dreamed of walking up to our boss and handing them a post-it note that reads: “I quit.” We walk out the door, and all of our school daydreams immediately come true.

There is a reason that this dream doesn’t come to fruition often. Jobs provide us with funds for bills, access to insurance, and stability. There are usually more reasons not to quit than there are to quit.

That doesn’t mean you can’t ever quit your job or change careers! There are many industries out there that you explore and passions to find before changing careers. Learn how your career path can give you peace of mind and ignite your passion!

When Should You Change Careers?

You Hate Your Job

There are many reasons for changing career paths. For starters, those that hate their job. If you go to bed every night thinking about how you don’t want to work the next day, it may be time to find a new job. When you dread going to work, it can lead you to complacency and depression.

You Are Not Being Adequately Compensated

This is a fairly common cause of changing careers. When the salary isn’t enough or the benefits aren’t covering enough, it may be time to look elsewhere. If you enjoy your job and you are good at your job, approach your boss and request a raise! However, if you are already looking at switching careers, let this encourage you to look harder!

You Know You Would Go If Given The Chance

If you are constantly daydreaming about a new job or career, consider looking into it! Look through local ads and online job boards. Chances are you may be able to find something. When you spend more time wanting to leave than enjoying your role in the company, it’s time to look harder. Don’t quit right away, but let this motivate you!

How Do You Find Your Passions?

What Do You Love To Do?

Consider your favorite hobbies. Is there something that you love to do that could make you money? For example, crocheting. If you love crocheting, look into seamstress jobs or sell some of your work online. It won’t be easy to reach immediate success, but with the right resources, it’s possible! Or maybe you love working with people. Consider looking into jobs where you can help people and make a difference.

Learn as Much as You Can

To pursue a career in something you love, you need to conduct some research. After contemplating your passions and love, look into related occupations. You can find a job for almost anything, you just have to look for it. You can search online, through college catalogs, and friends. Research more about your passion and learn as much as you can about applying it to a career.

Utilize Your Free Time

When you aren’t at work, what are you doing? Are you doing one specific hobby? Or are you traveling? Maybe you are laying in bed on your phone. If you want to change careers, you need to learn more about yourself. Find the things that give you the most satisfaction. Chances are, you are leaving your job because you are unsatisfied. You don’t want to go from one unsatisfactory experience to another. Spend your free time trying new things, talking to those closest to you, and discovering what you love the most.
